Monograph-in-Progress
My forthcoming monograph argues that eugenic scientists’ efforts to gain support for their ideology hinged on visuality and performance and, reciprocally, these performances aligned eugenicists with scientific credibility and biosocial progress. This project will explore how eugenic science was conducted, how eugenicists’ methods and conclusions were spread beyond research institutions and organizations, and how eugenicists’ public performances allowed for increasingly broader audiences to take up, interpret, and reproduce eugenics ideology. Looking at how minoritarian communities responded to eugenics proliferation in the popular sphere through theatrical and activist performances, this project takes up how eugenics was remolded time and time again in the eyes and minds of lay performers and audiences.
